Y'know, when I saw the trailer for the first RIO the resounding feeling was that it was going to suck. An animated movie about birds just looked lame to me. And so, I skipped it until one day I caught it on HBO, sucked into it like a trap by my offspring, and I was proven…wrong. I so wanted to be right, but I got all wrapped up in this silly ass bird movie that had a really well-cast batch of actors doing the voices and a really fun, percussive score by John Powell. The animation was pretty solid as well and I just had to let my hate go and embrace the love for RIO. And now, we get a sequel in RIO 2, which looks to be just as silly, fun, and musically enhanced as the original, as evidenced in this new trailer.

Here's the synopsis:
Blu, Jewel and their three kids living the perfect domesticated life in the magical city that is Rio de Janeiro. When Jewel decides the kids need to learn to live like real birds, she insists the family venture into the Amazon. As Blu tries to fit in with his new neighbors, he worries he may lose Jewel and the kids to the call of the wild.
I like that they're taking this out of the city and into the wild, which allows for all manner of creatures to be included. This isn't genre defining cinema by any stretch, but it's got a good vibe, it's easy on the brain, and not as reckless on the senses as some of the other animated stuff that comes out of the chute. I'll be happy to give this one a go in theaters as I'm sure I don't have much of a choice anyway.
RIO 2, starring Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, George Lopez, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, Andy Garcia, John Leguizamo, Bruno Mars, and Kristin Chenoweth, flies into theaters on April 11, 2014.
