Despite Disney taking the film and over-saturating it to absurd levels, FROZEN’s success is due in large part by co-writer and director Jennifer Lee. She made a name for herself in writing WRECK-IT RALPH, and solidified it with her sophomore effort about two sisters and a whole lotta ice!. Given the money it’s made, I’m about as shocked as you are that a sequel (or twenty) hasn’t been announced, but Jennifer Lee has her next project lined up regardless, and that would be an adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time.”
If you’re unfamiliar with the childhood classic, the story focuses on Meg Murry, a teenager who is transported on an adventure through time and space with her younger brother Charles Wallace and her friend Calvin O’Keefe to rescue her father, a scientist, from the evil forces that hold him prisoner on another planet. While a director has not yet been lined up for this big-screen adaptation (Disney did a direct-to-TV affair back in 2003), Jennifer Lee will still remain a part of Disney’s animation department. It’s weird to say but I’m actually in the majority that felt FROZEN was a fantastic film. If Lee continues her focus on strong characters that service the plot (as opposed to being in service of it), then I look forward to her future endeavors.
Given that the script is now being written, we can probably expect Lee’s A WRINKLE IN TIME to hit theaters sometime in 2016.
