After successful big screen adaptations of DC heavy hitters Superman and Batman in the 70s and 80s, Marvel turned their attention to striking back with a blockbuster version of one of their own hot properties: Spider-Man. The project languished in developmental hell for a few years before the success of X-MEN in 2000 seemingly got the ball rolling, with Sam Raimi attached to direct. SPIDER-MAN hit theatres in 2002, and unsurprisingly was a smash hit. Along with X-MEN it really paved the way for the action packed, humour filled and fun comic book movie that is now the standard Marvel template. Sam Raimi did a great job with the film and its sequel (*cough*) but how closely did the noted horror maestro follow the source material of Stan Lee's Spider-Man? And what other noted auteurs considered helming the film originally? That's what we'll be taking a look at in this editon of From Page to Screen!
