Back in November of last year, when we were talking about PARANORMAL ACTIVITY being greenlit for a release later this year, I pitched my idea for a sequel: an origin story set in the 1980s detailing how the demon came to first find a young Katie and her family. And today we find out that’s exactly what’s going to happen.
Dread Central and Bloody Disgusting are reporting that Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who directed CATFISH (a movie everyone but me seemingly loved), will direct PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3, which will head back in time. As I argued, for the PARANORMAL franchise to be successful, they first needed to lay the framework for the mythology and then they’d be free to hop around wherever they want.
I had also mentioned they should largely abandon the “found footage” format for the third film and while that hasn’t been confirmed, it seems likely considering home video wasn’t prevalent enough to have multiple cameras and a plethora of footage to last an entire movie.
Christopher B. Landon is writing the script for the film and despite it being based on a premise I pitched, I still don’t think it’s a good idea. But from a business standpoint, it’s the only way the series could stay relevant.
Joost and Schulman won’t have much time to pull together their film considering it’s already May and the film is set for release in five months. Do you think these guys are the right ones for the job?
