It’s time for a new episode of our video series WTF Happened to This Horror Movie?, and for this one we’re looking into the making of the 2001 film From Hell (watch it HERE), in which Johnny Depp solves the mystery of the Jack the Ripper murders. From Hell has its share of fans, but it was based on a graphic novel by writer Alan Moore and artist Eddie Campbell, and many felt that this loose adaptation didn’t live up to the source material. To find out what we had to say about it, check out the embed above.
From Hell was directed by The Hughes Brothers from a screenplay by Terry Hayes and Rafael Yglesias. The film has the following synopsis:
Inspector Fred Abberline is determined to track down Jack the Ripper in Victorian east London. As well as his Sergeant Peter Godley, Abberline is helped on the case by visions he has while high on opium, and adding urgency to his investigations is `unfortunate’ Mary Kelly, a potential Ripper victim with whom the Inspector is falling in love.
Depp is joined in the cast by Heather Graham, Ian Holm, Robbie Coltrane, Ian Richardson, and Jason Flemyng.
This is what the WTF Happened to This Horror Movie series is all about:
Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?
The From Hell episode of WTF Happened to This Horror Movie was Written, Edited, and Narrated by Tyler Nichols, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
