Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk till Dawn starred George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino (who also wrote the script) as a pair of brothers who took a family of hostages as they fled from the law across the border to Mexico, only to find themselves trapped in a saloon filled with vampires. The film went on to spawn several sequels as well as a live-action TV series for Rodriguez's El Rey Network, but it would seem that the franchise still has one more project up its sleeve – an animated series.
While speaking with SFX Magazine, Robert Rodriguez spoke about the creation of the From Dusk till Dawn TV series.
Over here, I have my own television network [El Rey]. So I had a television network here. And I needed to create programming, so Quentin [Tarantino] and I still control the rights to it. So I went, 'Oh, wow, I'd love to expand the story of Santánico Pandemonium, and the whole Aztec vampire lore for my network'. And then internationally it was just put out as a Netflix original, I think is probably how you saw it. But here it was an original series for my television network, action television network called El Rey, which is, you know, the place they're trying to get to at the end of Dusk till Dawn so it fits perfectly [laughs]. That was originally why we did it, so we did three seasons of that.
Rodriguez continued, saying, "And now we're looking towards, we're developing an animated Dusk till Dawn. You’re the first person to hear that!" SFX didn't seem to think that the animated series would be a remake of the movie, but rather take inspiration from the live-action TV and further explore the world of Aztec vampires. Would you be down for an animated From Dusk till Dawn series?
Robert Rodriguez's most recent project was We Can Be Heroes for Netflix, a superhero film that follows the children of Earth's superheroes as they're whisked away to a government safe house when alien invaders kidnap their parents. The film was one of the streaming service's biggest successes of the holiday season, and they're already got the ball rolling on a sequel.
