Last night, we learned that THE CRAZIES remake / THE LAST WITCH HUNTER director Breck Eisner is in talks to take the helm of the next FRIDAY THE 13TH film, which production company Platinum Dunes has been developing at Paramount for a few years now. Whether Eisner or someone else ends up signing on to direct the film, it appears that this project will need to be in production by the end of January.
The California state film commission recently announced the latest batch of movies that have been chosen to receive tax credits as part of California's Film & Television Tax Credit Program. Among the recipients was FRIDAY THE 13TH, which will be receiving a $5.6 million credit.
The program offers tax credits of up to 25% of a project's budget, however there are many conditions that a project has to live up to in order to be eligible for the credit, and according to the Variety report one of those conditions is that it must begin filming within 180 days of being selected. Since the announcement was made on August 2nd, that would mean that FRIDAY THE 13TH needs to be filming by January 29th.
After spending some time in development hell, it looks like FRIDAY THE 13TH is indeed finally about to move into the production stage.
The latest draft of the script was written by PRISONERS scribe Aaron Guzikowski. Guzikowski also wrote the Mark Wahlberg thriller HOME INVASION for Paramount, another project that has been selected to receive a tax credit.
It's not likely that FRIDAY THE 13TH will make its previously announced January 13, 2017 release date, but a 2017 release is likely necessary, as the rights to the franchise will revert to Warner Bros. in 2018. WB handed the rights to Paramount for a five year period back in 2013.
