In a huge win for original IP and respecting the theatrical window, Disney/20 Century Studios’ Free Guy has officially crossed the $300 million mark at the worldwide box office.
The Ryan Reynolds-led video game-inspired comedy has grossed $108.8 million domestically and $193.6 million from international markets for a global take of $302.4 million. Directed by Shawn Levy, Free Guy is the sole original IP Hollywood movie to bank $300 million globally in 2021 and only the second, along with Tenet, to do so during the pandemic. Free Guy was released at a time when many were concerned about the surging Delta Variant but the film proved that exclusive theatrical releases, especially for movies that are actually good, lead to great box office success and show people are willing to hit their local movie theater.
Free Guy’s international box office was largely benefitted from its release in China, where it continues to perform strongly. The film became the first major studio movie to open in the market after the summer blackout and it has so far made $89 million to date. Free Guy is already the third highest-grossing Hollywood movie in the market since cinemas reopened in July 2020. Other significant foreign markets include the UK ($21.2 million), Russia ($10.8 million), and France ($5.2 million).
