A second time on top for body swap!
The increasingly dire North American box office found the Blumhouse horror–comedy FREAKY once again in first place this weekend with an estimated $1.2 million.
The R-rated body-swapping movie with Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton was slashed by 66% from its opening last weekend for a ten-day domestic total of $5.6 million.
The Universal-distributed thriller from HAPPY DEATH DAY director Christopher Landon has an additional $3.6 million from international territories for a worldwide total of $9.2 million (on a reported cost of $6 million).
With coronavirus cases continuing to rise and major cities keeping cinemas closed, the theatrical landscape in the U.S. remains in a barren state. The period before Thanksgiving is generally busy for box office, and this weekend's totals are a stark contrast to the same point in 2019, when Disney's FROZEN II opened with over $130 million.
The rest of the releases on the chart couldn't crack seven figures. The Robert De Niro family comedy THE WAR WITH GRANDPA was in second place, followed by the R-rated Kevin Costner/Diane Lane drama LET HIM GO in third and the supernatural thriller COME PLAY in fourth.
Disney maintained their trend of pushing appropriate older titles back onto screens, this time tossing out the Christmas comedy THE SANTA CLAUSE in 1580 locations for $461,000.
The PG-rated holiday movie, with Tim Allen as an unintentional Santa replacement, now has a domestic total of $145.3 million including its original theatrical release back in 1994.
The Liam Neeson crime-thriller HONEST THIEF was in sixth place over its seventh weekend, while the new Jackie Chan action movie VANGUARD threw a weak punch in seventh place with an opening of $400,000 on 1375 domestic screens.
The Stanley Tong-directed production, with Chan as the leader of an elite security company, has a worldwide total of $49.7 million including its China release back in September.
Wrapping up the list was Christopher Nolan's action-thriller TENET, the new anime movie FATE/STAY NIGHT: UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS, and the re-release of Will Ferrell's holiday comedy ELF.
