Christopher Landon is the mastermind behind the Happy Death Day films and the recent horror/comedy release, Freaky. Both films take horror and add a bit of an out of this world twist to their plots which makes them perfect to share the same universe. If Happy Death Day star Jessica Rothe had her way, the Blumhouse hits would definitely crossover for one hell of a meta experience.
Jessica Rothe played the role of "Tree" in the Happy Death Day films and while speaking to "CinemaBlend", the actress believes that a crossover with Freaky should be something writer and director Christopher Landon should strongly consider:
"That would be so insane and so much fun. I'm down. Here's the thing, like anything that Chris [Landon] comes up with or CinemaBlend pitches it just sounds like a fun, wonderful romp. I think one of the things I love so much about the Happy Death Day movies and what was infused into Freaky, even though it was in such a new and inventive way is those worlds are so fun and filled with humor and heart. Both of those movies have so much heart even though they are funny, dark and so twisted and that's the reason I think they could overlap. And there is that little bit of unexplained magic, sci-fi twistiness, so I can totally see how maybe Tree and Millie figure some shit out together."
Freaky follows a young high school girl (Kathryn Newton) that swaps bodies with a deranged serial killer called The Butcher (Vince Vaughn). It becomes a race against time when she realizes that she has less than 24 hours before the swap becomes permanent but the only problem is she now looks like a towering psychopath who’s the target of a city-wide manhunt while The Butcher looks like her and has brought his appetite for carnage to Homecoming. The film also stars Uriah Shelton, Alan Ruck, Katie Finneran, Celeste O' Connor, and Misha Osherovich. In Happy Death Day, a college student named Tree (Jessica Rothe) must relive the day of her murder over and over again, in a loop that will end only when she discovers the killer's identity. Rothe goes on to say that she would be honored to share the title of "scream queen" in Landon's cinematic universe if one were to happen:
"I love [Freaky] so much and I also just love Chris Landon, and I love his brain. And I feel so honored that both Kathryn Newton and Vince Vaughn are my fellow scream queens. Like the fact that Vince Vaughn is a scream queen is one of my favorite things in the world. I think they were absolutely astounding in the film. It's so much fun, they really blew me away."
I'm not going to lie, I'd be all in for this too but before we started getting all MCU with the Freaky/Happy Death Day crossover, can we please get Happy Death Day 3 first? Christopher Landon already has a script ready to go, it's perfect for streaming and would likely do very well. Once Blumhouse gives us the Happy Death Day trilogy we deserve, then we can talk Tree and Mille joining forces in Freaky Death Day.
