Late last month we learned that Frank Darabont was in talks to direct THE SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN sequel. It has now been made official as Universal released an official press release which confirms Darabont and announced the new title: THE HUNTSMAN. Darabont also wrote the current draft of the screenplay which will in fact be a prequel to the first film with some returning cast members.
The fantastical world of 2012’s global hit SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN expands to reveal how the fates of two characters, The Huntsman Eric and Ravenna, intersected before they met Snow White. Chris Hemsworth and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron return to their roles in a new epic action-adventure, THE HUNTSMAN. Three-time Oscar® nominee Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) directs and wrote the current draft of the screenplay, with earlier drafts by Craig Mazin and Evan Spiliotopoulos. Producer Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland) once again leads the team in a breathtaking new tale from the legendary saga.
They also announced the release date of April 22nd, 2016 for the movie. This pushes Alex Kurtzman's present-day adaptation of THE MUMMY to June 24, 2016. While I had no interest in a movie based on THE HUNTSMAN character, I’m definitely more open and interested to the idea now that Darabont seems to have immersed himself in the project. Maybe he see’s potential in this story after all.
All in favour of a Charlize Theron leading prequel instead?
