Despite his previous criticisms about Marvel movies, director Francis Ford Coppola is admitting that the Ryan Reynolds-led comic film, Deadpool, is “amazing.”
During a profile for Variety, Coppola complimented the film for takings risks and even admitted to liking it. You can check out his statement below!
“I liked ‘Deadpool,’ I thought that was amazing. Cinema is supposed to illuminate contemporary life, and make us understand what’s going on. So we need the artists to give us a vision of what’s going on.”
This is a far cry from his original opinion when discussing Marvel movies during his chat with Deadline. During that interview, Coppola called out the brand for using a “formulaic approach” for financial gain. He then added, “I feel that approach is taken to reduce the economic risk of movies and I feel the ‘risk factor’ is an element that makes movies sometimes be great. Also, the formulaic film draws most available resources to them, leaving little for more daring productions, reducing diversity.”
I guess we can say both Deadpool films are anything but formulaic. There was an inherent risk in adapting the character for the big screen while also maintaining his R-rated sensibilities. The first film and its sequel were huge hits using this approach and it will be interesting to see if they keep this up now that the character is a part of the MCU following the Disney/Fox merger. It was recently announced that Shawn Levy will be helming the third film and given the fact that Levy and Reynolds have developed a solid working relationship after Free Guy and The Adam Project, I’m sure they will both work hard to make sure Deadpool continues to take risks.
What are YOUR thoughts on Francis Ford Coppola liking Deadpool, and do you think he feels the same about the sequel?
