We all love Andy Serkis, that’s just a fact. The man works harder than most and deserves all the credit in the world for making performance capture a household term even my mother can understand. For the last few years the notion of Serkis finally receiving substantial credit in the way of an Oscar has come up in conversation a lot. Fox has recently revealed that it will campaign for Serkis to land a Best Supporting Actor nod for his role as Caesar in DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.
THR reported the news saying Fox will push for several members of the Dawn cast, including performance-capture actor Toby Kebbell, to be considered in the Supporting categories across the board. It makes sense for Fox to go for the Supporting category I think as there is a better chance they will give him a nod that way considering the strong leads he would be going up against in the Best Actor category (Steve Carell in FOXCATCHER comes to mind). Could this be his year? With some strong campaigning and visibility, it could very well be.
The Academy, for better or worse, has been trying to step out of the stigma that it’s a bunch of old codgers running the place with "cool" hosts and calling it The Oscars finally. However, they have also been slow to recognize performance-capture as art. Let’s get it going already!
What do you think? Will he get the nomination?
