A Television series based upon THE EXORCIST has been in the works for so long that I'd actually completely forgotten about it (I have the memory of a fish apparently) but now Fox has restored the project to life by ordering a pilot episode based upon William Blatty’s 1971 novel of the same name. Whenever a potential television series based upon a classic film is being discussed, my initial reaction is typically to wonder what the hell those people are smoking and why oh why would they every consider this to be a good idea. However, when my list of all-time favourite television series includes Hannibal, I realize that I have to keep an open mind.
Fox's pilot for the new EXORICST series is being described as a modern reinvention inspired by William Blatty’s book, as well as "a propulsive, serialized psychological thriller following two very different men tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession, and confronting the face of true evil." As with most things, there's definitely potential for something good to happen, but when you're trying to follow-up a film like THE EXORCIST, you need to be more than merely "good" in order to stand apart.
