When the Antoine Fuqua led big screen take on 24 never happened, we instead got the 12 episode limited series Live Another Day. That series didn't garner the ratings boost FOX was hoping for despite Kiefer Sutherland up for doing another season. Now, it looks like FOX is going to play it safe and try 24 on the small screen again but with even less Kiefer than before.
TV Line is reporting that a new limited run of 24 is in development with a different lead actor. The twenty-something lead is being billed as an anti-hero and would be partnered with a veteran female agent. But, fear not Jack Bauer fans, as Kiefer Sutherland's character could still appear in a limited capacity. Live Another Day co-star Yvonne Strahovski could also return for the new season.
Series creator Howard Gordon confirmed the new series would be presented in real time and could pave the way for a future 24 episode run of the show, just like the old days. The spin-off will be led by Manny Coto and Evan Katz who will serve as writers and executive producers. While I am not against this idea, what made 24 work was Sutherland's portrayal of Jack Bauer as the ultimate spy badass. Through the series, they tried to add supporting characters played by James Badge Dale and even Freddie Prinze Jr. to try and play off of him but neither truly worked. I am not entirely convinced there is someone out there to take the mantle from Jack Bauer but I am open to ideas.
There is no projected date for production on the new 24, but stay tuned for more as it develops.
