As last year's Prison Break revival didn't exactly impress in the ratings department, it wasn't clear whether or not Michael (Wentworth Miller), Lincoln (Dominic Purcell), Sara (Sarah Wayne Callies), and the rest of the gang would return for another season, but in December, Dominic Purcell teased that a sixth season of the series was indeed in the works.
Flash forward to the new year and Fox network president Michael Thorn confirmed to reporters at the Television Critics Association's winter press-tour that a sixth season of Prison Break is in development. "We are developing a new iteration of Prison Break," Thorn said. "It’s in very early stages of development, but we’re really excited about it." Using the phrase "new iteration" got fans wondering whether the Scofield brothers would actually be returning, but Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman later added that "it would not be an entirely new cast," meaning that, at the very least, both Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell would be back. "It’s very early at this stage," Newman said. "[Series creator] Paul Scheuring had an idea for another season, and he came and pitched it to Michael and the team. They were excited about it, but it’s super early. We haven’t seen any written materials at all."
Although its subsequent seasons never quite matched the brilliance of the first, I was a fan of Prison Break throughout its entire original run, and while the revival series certainly had its moments, it didn't quite capture the high-intensity spirit of the show. It also wrapped things up nicely for most of the main characters, but I'd imagine that it won't be too hard to conjure up a new reason for the gang to get involved with yet another highly implausible break-out/in scenario.
