Oh my, what is this? Today, Fox Animation went and scooped up the middle grade school book THE CARE AND FEEDING OF A PET BLACK HOLE by author Michelle Cuevas for an animated feature film adaptation. For the moment, Fox is finalizing a deal that has WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES director Matt Reeves looking to board the project as a producer for his 6th and Idaho banner.
In THE CARE AND FEEDING OF A PET BLACK HOLE, an 11-year old named Stella Rodriguez, who shows up at NASA to request that her recording be included in Carl Sagan’s Golden Record. A black hole follows her home, intending on being her new pet. She names it Larry. It swallows everything it touches, which takes care of the ugly sweaters her aunt has made for her, the smelly class hamster she’s taking care of, and reminders of her dead father that are just too painful to have around. When the family dog gets lost inside Larry, Stella ties a bed sheet around her claw foot tub and dives in to retrieve the pooch. But the tub gets sucked in too, along with her brother who happened to be taking a bath at the time. Adventure in the black hole follows as the young girl realizes she has been letting her own grief over her father’s death consume her.
Whoa! This sounds awesome! As of now, Cuevas' book is set to be published by Dial Books for Young Readers in September of this year. Adam Kassan and Rafi Crohn were the ones who brought the book in for 6th and Idaho's consideration and Elizabeth Reddy will oversee for Fox Animation. It's also to note that Cuevas' other book, entitled Confessions of an Imaginary Friend, is also being developed for an animated feature presentation by Fox. Wow! I'm guessing that Fox has really enjoyed what they've seen from Cuevas' body of work.
For the moment, no casting or release details for the film have been announced. That being said, and as we mentioned him earlier, Matt Reeves' WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES will storm into theaters on July 14, 2017.
