So, the second biggest announcement of the year has arrived, inching just ahead of the news that there would be a new Star Wars trilogy. Yep, you guessed it; Morgan Spurlock, director of SUPERSIZE ME, will make a 3D concert film for the British boy band One Direction for 2013!
“This is an incredible opportunity and an amazing moment in time for the band,” said director/producer Spurlock. “To capture this journey and share it with audiences around the world will be an epic undertaking that I am proud to be a part of.”
Producer Simon Cowell, who discovered the band through his show The X-Factor, echoed Spurlock’s comments, saying, “I’m delighted we’re making this film and Morgan is the perfect person to give that access-all-areas, behind-the-scenes look into what it’s like to be One Direction today. What the band have achieved is incredible, they and their fans have made history around the world – this is for them.”
So, this is pretty random, given that Spurlock is known more for his quirky documentaries that tackle topics like fast food, manscaping, branding, and comic con. Now that I think of it, I guess throwing in a boy band film fits well within his parameters, but not as a straight concert film, a la KATY PERRY: PART OF ME. I guess we’ll see, but Spurlock hasn’t done much to impress in my opinion. Maybe this will be his true calling.
The yet-to-be titled One Direction concert film will get supersized in 3D on August 30, 2013.
