Following the monstrous success of DEADPOOL, a sequel was pretty much guaranteed, and there was much rejoicing when that sequel was officially announced with every member of the original creative team returning. Unfortunately, the development of DEADPOOL 2 hit a little snag last week when Tim Miller departed the project. We don't know exactly why Miller left, but rumours say that it had to do with casting and conflicting issues on which direction to take the sequel. Miller sadly won't be the only member of DEADPOOL's creative team not returning for the sequel as Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, has announced that he won't be back to compose the score out of solidarity with Miller.
The composer posted the following on his Facebook page earlier today:
Dear friends,
It is with a heavy heart that I have decided not to score the upcoming Deadpool Movie. I love this character and creating his and the movie's original score was a monumental chapter in my life, personally and professionally.
Since it was revealed that Deadpool's brilliant creative director Tim Miller will not be involved in the project anymore, I have undertaken some soul searching. Tim was the driving force behind Deadpool and me getting involved in this amazing project. Deadpool without Tim at the helm just does not sit right with me and that is why I have decided not to be involved in the second chapter.
It was a difficult decision, as I love the project so much and I know how eagerly the next installment will be anticipated, it's hard to walk away from something so unique, but it also has to feel right.
Hope everyone understands. Onward and upward.
Love,
Tom
Although I've enjoyed Holkenborg's work on other movies, I can't say that I found his work on DEADPOOL to be particularly memorable. That said, it is a little concerning that several of the creative forces behind DEADPOOL's success are jumping ship. Who knows whether we actually have anything to worry about, but I have faith in Ryan Reynolds' love for the character. As far as a replacement for Tim Miller, 20th Century Fox hasn't chosen a replacement yet but it's said that JOHN WICK co-director David Leitch is the current front-runner for the position.
Now that the position of composer is also open, who would you like to see take on the job?
