Face-Off: Vince Vaughn vs. Jon Favreau

Last Updated on November 20, 2023

Christian Bale was the big winner in last week’s Face-Off as we pitted him against another one of today’s greatest actors, Leonardo DiCaprio. In honor of his win, I wanted to quote his character from AMERICAN PSYCHO for a moment:

“Do you like Phil Collins? I’ve been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn’t understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins’ presence became more apparent.”

Gotta love Patrick Bateman.

Vince Vaughn has a new comedy called DELIVERY MAN out this Friday so for this week’s battle I decided to put him in the ring with one of his long-time buddies, Jon Favreau.

Filmography
Like his pal Jon Favreau, Vince came into our lives via the 1996 classic SWINGERS which is one of my all-time favorite comedies. Other stand-outs for Vaughn in the 90s were THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK, RUDY and RETURN TO PARADISE. The 2000s were interesting as well, including mega-hits like THE WEDDING CRASHERS and MR. AND MRS. SMITH as well as fun comedies like OLD SCHOOL and DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY.

As big a fan I am of this guy, I soon began skipping several of his flicks because the trailers looked brutal (FRED CLAUS, THE BREAK-UP, COUPLES RETREAT, etc.). This trend has continued as I haven’t really seen any of his movies this decade. That will all change with the release of ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES this December. I’ll always be a Vince Vaughn fan because he is such a natural actor, whether he is being funny or serious but he needs more consistency in his career because there seems to be more turkeys in his filmography than there are quality films.
Jon Favreau did well for himself in the 90s with RUDY, SWINGERS, DEEP IMPACT and the underrated VERY BAD THINGS on his CV. The 2000s included THE REPLACEMENTS, ELF, DAREDEVIL, I LOVE YOU, MAN and IRON MAN. Unlike Vaughn, many of Favreau’s roles are supporting or smaller roles as he began focusing on his work behind the camera. This may have ultimately hurt Jon in this category if it wasn’t for his great success behind the camera, having directed MADE, ELF, IRON MAN, IRON MAN 2 and COWBOYS & ALIENS. I’m looking forward to seeing him next in Scorsese’s THE WOLF OF WALL STREET
this December.
Quotes from Swingers
Trent: “Look at this, okay? I want you to remember this face, here. Okay? This is the guy behind the guy behind the guy.”

Trent: “I don’t want you to be the guy in the PG-13 movie everyone’s really hoping makes it happen. I want you to be like the guy in the rated R movie, you know, the guy you’re not sure whether or not you like yet. You’re not sure where he’s coming from. Okay? You’re a bad man. You’re a bad man, Mikey. You’re a bad man, bad man.”

Trent: “You’re a big winner. I’m gonna ask you a simple question and I want you to listen to me: who’s the big winner here tonight at the casino? Huh? Mikey, that’s who. Mikey’s the big winner. Mikey wins.”

Trent: “All right, all right I’ll ask her. Miss, miss! Do you know where the high school girls hang out around here? What? What? That’s right, I’m the asshole! I’m the asshole!”

Trent:”They’re gonna give daddy the Rain Man suite, you dig that?”

Trent: “No, baby, you’re money.”
Mike: “Haven’t you seen Boyz N The Hood? Now one of us is going to get shot.”

Mike: “What the fuck are you carrying a gun for? What, in case somebody steps to you, Snoop Dogg?”

Mike: “Trent, the beautiful babies don’t work the midnight to six shift on a Wednesday. This is like the skank shift.”

Mike: “How about if I wait six weeks to call. I could tell her I found her number while I was cleaning out my wallet, I can’t remember where we met. I’ll ask her what she looks like and then I’ll ask her if we fucked. How about that? Would that be money?”

Mike: [Mike pays the delivery guy and then tosses the bags of food at Trent and Sue] “Eat, eat, you fucking jackals!”

Mike: “The whole Judy Garland thing kinda turned me on. Does that make me some kind of fag?”
Lbs.
When Vaughn puts on weight, he looks tired, pasty, angry, sad and like he just went on a pizza and beer binge over the weekend. It’s just not a good look for him. Some people can pull off the double-chin – he can’t. Thankfully he fluctuates often and we usually see a svelte Vince once again a few weeks later.
Heavy Favreau looks happy, peaceful and just right.
Other
Vince Vaughn is that guy you know you’d love to hang out with in real life, whether it’s by enjoying hot dogs together at a Blackhawks game or playing video games with him and trying to make Gretzky’s head bleed. He seems like a very charming, boyish, funny and loose guy. In fact, he’s seems so down-to-earth that I had a dream once in which we were friends. He loses major points for dating Jennifer Aniston because I can’t stand her but he got a few points back for marrying a very pretty Canuck. Oh yeah, Vince Vaughn has always been money!
What can I say about Jon?! We here at the JoBlo offices dig this cat because he’s always been good to us. In 2003, I was sent to NYC to cover the premiere of ELF and got to hand Favreau a copy of JoBlo.com Presents…The 50 Coolest Movies of All-Time (SWINGERS is one of the 50). Jon later acknowledged the gift to other reporters and I am sure, to this day, the book gets regular reads in the Favreau bathroom.

Fast forward eight years to the 2011 San Diego Comic Con where Jon boy surprised everyone at the JoBlo.com party by spinning records as the guest DJ (Favreau discusses it here). I wasn’t there but I heard he didn’t play any Foreigner or Toto which kind of disappoints me. Still, these two incidents are more than enough to give Favreau the win in the “other” category.
Jon Favreau
Vaughn lost his battle against Owen Wilson in a previous Face-Off and it looks like it’ll be more of the same in his latest head-to-head versus his good friend Jon Favreau. In the end, Jon’s versatility (producer, writer, actor, director) and better filmography is what puts him over the top. The way I look at it, Jon Favreau seems like he is always climbing higher while Vaughn seems content remaining exactly where he is.
