A new image of Sandra Bullock from the upcoming GRAVITY has "floated" online today, thanks to USA Today, who have the shot of the lovely actress and some new information on the film from director Alfonso Cuarón (CHILDREN OF MEN). The anxiety-ridden film "follows Ryan Stone (Bullock), a medical engineer on her first space shuttle mission, alongside veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney). Their routine mission goes very, very wrong when the shuttle is destroyed, leaving them tethered together and spiraling in space." Cuarón prepared the zero gravity environment for five years, saying:
"We wanted to shoot the whole film showing zero gravity with the actors moving in a choreographic way. This has never been done before. It was a journey of learning. But it looks pretty darn good."
The film is a big committment for Bullock, who took on the challenging role with her usual fortitude. Coming off the summer comedy hit THE HEAT, this is a big change of pace and a smart move, as it keeps her roles diverse and interesting. Being stuck in a rut doesn't do anyone any good these days.
Producer David Heyman echoed Bullock's committment, saying:
"Sandra had to be in tremendous shape for this kind of filming. When she was not shooting she was either spending time with her son or working out for these scenes."
In terms of her character, Cuarón says that Bullock has to face the loneliness and disance of her home world, saying:
"She's confronted with the idea that Earth is so far away. She can see the whole Earth and she doesn't belong to it. What is really scary for people is being lost or alone in the immensity of the void."
GRAVITY will open the Venice Film Festival on August 28, 2013 and Cuarón will also show off footage at Comic Con during Warner Bros. panel on July 20, 2013.
GRAVITY hits theaters on October 4, 2013.
