Fletch still lives, and will be “re-imagined”

Ever since he broke the big story of Bibleland two decades ago, investigative reporter Irwin M. Fletcher has had a difficult time finding another case to crack on the big screen.

Now Warner Bros. will give the wisecracking master of disguise another chance to snoop around — the studio has grabbed the rights to Gregory McDonald’s FLETCH novels.

According to Heat Vision: “No writer or director is on board, but Warners and the producers are aiming for a reimagining, not a remake, and hope to make an smart action comedy that plays out on a bigger canvas than the previous movies.”

There have been numerous attempts over the years to bring the character back to screens in some form (prequel, sequel or remake), with actors like Jason Lee, Ben Affleck, Zach Braff, Joshua Jackson and even Chris Tucker (guh) named as possible replacements for Chevy Chase. (Like they could.)

Kevin Smith struggled for ages to get the project going, and the Weinsteins once tried to throw together a quick cheapie just to retain the rights (as they’ve done with the HELLRAISER and CHILDREN OF THE CORN properties).
