UPDATED WITH SPOILER SUPREME: Five new photos from Star Trek Into Darkness, featuring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana

UPDATED:  Scan to the bottom to see what could potentially be a MAJOR Spoiler.

Entertainment Weekly’s latest issue will feature a cover story on J.J. Abrams‘ STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS and today we have a peek at some of their photos for the spread.  Featuring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, and Abrams’ himself, the pics give us another window into some scenes we haven’t yet seen in stills or trailers, making them a bit more than just another round of photos.

Abrams addressed the returning castmembers’ approach to the sequel, saying,

”I would say all of the actors, uh, have more opinions this time. The first time they were all kind of trusting of me and of the process. They hadn’t proven to themselves that they could play these characters. Now they’ve been these characters, and they’ve been told — by me and by many others — that they are loved as these characters. So they came to the table with attitudes and opinions that in most cases were entirely valid and hugely important. And all of them are crazy-smart.”

Take a look:

“I’ll be disappointed [if he doesn’t direct our third film], but there are people in his circle that will carry on.” says Pine of Abrams’ taking on the STAR WARS franchise. “Kidnapping is always an option, right?” Certainly, that’s something that’s been on everyone’s mind.  Can STAR TREK keep on trekking without Abrams at the helm?  We’ll have to wait and see.

Pine also addresses the secrecy of the projects, saying,

“The exciting thing is there’s a possibility for change at any moment. Because of [the producers’] background in TV, there’s a possibility of changing story, dialogue, character points, action beats — these are all up for review at all times. Nothing is sacrosanct, no one is safe. You have to walk in and be really nimble.”

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS opens in IMAX 3D on May 15, 2013 and everywhere else on May 17, 2013.

SPOILER UPDATE:

Well, it seems that Entertainment Weekly is stirring up all kinds of shit with this little image (spotted by the folks at CBM), which confirms the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch’s character.  Peep at your own peril.

So, is that the final word on Cumberbatch’s role as KHAN!!!?  Well, it seems like a strange type-o, for sure, but I’d still hold it as a possibility until the DNA tests come back (i.e. official confirmation).  However, it does jive with much of Cumberbatch’s dialogue thus far in the trailers, which places him as a bit of a supreme/perfect being, which is kind of the genetic make-up of the original Khan in STAR TREK 2: THE WRATH OF KHAN.
