The 12th edition of the film festival Fantastic Fest, an annual celebration of genre-twisting cinema, is going to be held at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas from September 22nd to 29th, and the first wave of programming for the event has just been announced.
There are a lot of films that will be of great interest in horror fans in this line-up, especially the World Premiere screening of the fifth and final film in the PHANTASM franchise, the long-awaited PHANTASM: RAVAGER. That will be accompanied by a screening of the restored-in-4K original film, with writer/director Don Coscarelli, RAVAGER director David Hartman, and cast members in attendance. The screening of PHANTASM: REMASTERED will be streamed live to art house theatres across the country on September 24th.
Horror fans may also be hyped that James Bryan, director of the 1981 slasher DON'T GO IN THE WOODS, will be at the festival to unveil his film JUNGLE TRAP, which was shot on VHS in 1990 but was only just recently cut together and completed. JUNGLE TRAP is described as "a rampaging, top-notch camcorder adventure packed with ghosts, cannibal warriors, drunken pilots and bloodthirsty elderly bellboys".
Another special guest at the festival will be Tim Burton, with his latest film MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN receiving a red carpet screening.
The theme for this year's event is Indian cinema, with a dedicated block of new and repertory features made in India having been assembled "to showcase the wildly creative world of the second most populous country."
VR storytelling will also be making a strong showing at this Fantastic Fest, with VR studio Dark Corner on hand for a world premiere of a terrifying VR experience tied to the plot of founder Guy Shelmerdine's "fast-paced hell ride" MULE.
Dark Corner has also crafted BURLAP: REFLECTIONS, a VR companion experience to Justin Denton's short film BURLAP, which is a take on the classic "killer stalks a babysitter" scenario.
