First trailer for Netflix’s Altered Carbon reveals ambitious sci-fi series

Netflix has finally released a trailer for Altered Carbon, their upcoming sci-fi series based upon the novel by Richard K. Morgan, and the results are beautiful, mysterious, and likely quite expensive. Taking place more than 300 years in the future, Altered Carbon presents a society in which the technology exists to upload human consciousness into new bodies, referred to as "sleeves." Immortality is no longer a dream, but it comes with a hefty price tag that only the wealthy can afford.  Altered Carbon stars Joel Kinnaman as Takeshi Kovacs, a Japanese American (Will Yun Lee) who has been dead for centuries before being brought back and placed into a new body. The series also stars James Purefoy, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Martha Higareda , Ato Essandoh, Chris Conner, and Dichen Lachman.

Based on the classic cyberpunk noir novel by Richard K. Morgan, Altered Carbon is an intriguing story of murder, love, sex, and betrayal, set more than 300 years in the future. Society has been transformed by new technology: consciousness can be digitized; human bodies are interchangeable; death is no longer permanent. Takeshi Kovacs is the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned, “on ice”, for centuries until Laurens Bancroft, an impossibly wealthy, long-lived man, offers Kovacs the chance to live again. In exchange, Kovacs has to solve a murder … that of Bancroft himself.

Altered Carbon will debut on Netflix on February 2, 2018.
