CLOUD ATLAS, the latest film from Andy and Lana Wachoski and Tom Tykwer, was announced as part of the line-up for TIFF 2012 yesterday and now we have some official images from the film. The sprawling tale stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Hugh Grant, James D’Arcy, Susan Sarandon, Jim Sturgess, Jim Broadbent, and Ben Whishaw. Based on the 2004 novel by David Mitchell, the story involves an intricate number of characters and settings. “We thought about these individual characters as aspects of larger characters,” Lana Wachowski says. “Their lives are interwoven over one big story that takes place over a thousand years.”
Take a look:
Definitely some interesting images, especially of Hanks and Berry. Thus far, we’ve seen set pics of Berry and David in a 70’s setting, a red-haired Hugo Weaving (see below), and some compelling concept art, but nothing official. More images are set to trickle down today, which is probably a good indication that a trailer isn’t far behind. This is a very ambiguous project that could easily collapse under it’s own weight, but could also soar if it manages to pull off such a complex story. I’m hoping for the latter.
Here’s the synopsis from TIFF:
The powerful, inspiring epic Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.
CLOUD ATLAS arrives on October 26, 2012.
