First official image of Tom Cruise from Christopher McQuarrie’s Jack Reacher

The first image of Tom Cruise as JACK REACHER, the hero of author Lee Child’s “Reacher” novels has arrived, featuring a clean-cut Cruise in the midst of a car chase.  The Christopher McQuarrie directed film is the first attempt at adapting the character for the screen and has the potential to set up another franchise for Cruise.

“He is an extremely pragmatic, matter-of-fact person,” McQuarrie says of Reacher. “He’s very solitary, but he can’t walk away from a situation that needs to be made right. His own sense of right and wrong tie into that situation and he can’t leave until it’s been resolved. That’s his Achilles heel.”

Have a look:

“He is free from any sort of anxiety. He is truly not encumbered by all the bulls–t that makes up our daily lives,” McQuarrie says of Reacher’s character. “He literally and figuratively has no baggage.”

I’m actually in the middle of reading the book this is based on, One Shot, and I think it will be interesting to see Cruise pull this off.  JACK REACHER is definitely a more stoic character and kind of an asshole, which isn’t really Cruise’s forte these days.  However, he’s got the chops to pull it off and I look forward to seeing just how he does it.  Despite the height difference from the book.

“For those of you who know the books, I’m obviously not 6-foot-5, like Jack Reacher,” said the actor, who is 5-foot-7. “But Lee felt that I was the right guy to drive fast cars and kick the s–t out of people onscreen.”

JACK REACHER stars Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Robert Duvall, Jai Courtney, and Werner Herzog and is set for a December 21, 2012 release.
