First official image and synopsis for Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Guillermo Del Toro’s CRIMSON PEAK has promised to be a return to the Gothic haunted house films of a bygone era. With a cast as talented as Charlie Hunnam, Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, and Jessica Chastain, this is certainly the biggest studio horror film in a long time. There have been some set photos revealed during production but we now have the first official still from the movie along with a new synopsis.

Here’s the summary.

In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds…and remembers.

The still is a foreboding shot of Chastain dressed in Victorian garb in what could be the least inviting home on screen in some time. The staircase appears littered with dead leaves and there is a glaring hole in the wall at the top right of the image. This leads me to wonder if Chastain is inhabiting the dilapidated house or if maybe she is a ghost herself.

The appearance of stills and a synopsis could mean a trailer is on the way. I love Del Toro’s films and CRIMSON PEAK could harken back to movies like PAN’S LABYRINTH and THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE. This could also usher in a new era for big budget studio horror. One can hope, right?

CRIMSON PEAK opens in theaters on October 16, 2015.
