First Look – New Doom movie Doom: Annihilation

As I think we all know by this point in time, Universal is hard at work crafting an all-new movie based on the popular video game series DOOM. And today we have an update on the new film via our buddies over at DC who just passed along word that the flick is now called… wait for it… DOOM: ANNIHILATION. Not only that, but they snagged some first look stills from the upcoming movie, which you can check out below.

Add to that, it seems like reports that said that this new DOOM feature was a direct sequel to the original 2005 flick featuring The Rock and Karl Urban have since been proven false. That update passed along, here’s the official synopsis for DOOM: ANNIHILATION which follows

A group of space marines as they respond to a distress call from a base on a Martian moon, only to discover it’s been overrun by demonic creatures who threaten to create Hell on Earth.

The film is written and directed by Tony Giglio (S.W.A.T.: UNDER SIEGE) and it stars Amy Manson (ATLANTIS), Dominic Mafham (OPHELIA), Luke Allen-Gale (DOMINION), and Nina Bergman (THE CAR: ROAD TO REVENGE). Jeffery Beach (JARHEAD 3: THE SIEGE), Phillip Roth (DEATH RACE: BEYOND ANARCHY) and Ogden Gavanski (CULT OF CHUCKY) produced and Lorenzo Di Bonaventura (TRANSFORMERS) and John Wells (ANIMAL KINGDOM) are the movie's executive producers. Universal 1440 Entertainment is currently planning to unleash the new DOOM movie in Fall 2019.

And while we're here, the 2005 version of DOOM followed this synopsis:

A team of space marines known as the Rapid Response Tactical Squad, led by Sarge (The Rock), is sent to a science facility on Mars after somebody reports a security breach. There, they learn that the alert came after a test subject, a mass murderer purposefully injected with alien DNA, broke free and began killing people. Dr. Grimm (Rosamund Pike), who is related to team member Reaper (Karl Urban), informs them all that the chromosome can mutate humans into monsters — and is highly infectious.

That 2005 version was directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak (ROMEO MUST DIE) from a screenplay by David Callaham and Wesley Strick based on the infamous video game created by id Software. Lorenzo di Bonaventura produced the first film which starred Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Karl "Judge Dredd" Urban, Rosamund "Gone Girl" Pike, and some dude named Razaaq Adoti. Other notable cast members included Richard Brake (Rob Zombie's 31) as Cpl Dean Portman, Ben Daniels (THE EXORCIST) as Cpl. Eric "Goat" Fantom, and Doug Jones (PAN'S LABYRINTH) as Carmack Imp.

As we all know, DOOM (2005) was a financial and critical failure when it was released snagging a score of 19% on Rotten Tomatoes with the critic consensus reading: "Sure to please fans of the video game, but lacking in plot and originality to please other moviegoers."

But my favorite review came from good old Roger Ebert who said:
