The VENOM movie from Sony got into production quite fast, with Tom Hardy starring as Venom/Eddie Brock and Ruben Fleischer directing. In the time since the movie began production, we haven’t seen too many looks at the movie other than social media glimpses and some blurry set pics. But now we have the first official photo from the movie, and it indeed looks very official.
Coming from IGN, the first official photo shows Hardy as Brock working his journalist magic, and minus all the symbiote business. It’s a nice image to come before the horrific ones of him as Venom, so take it all in while you can.
IGN also got a hold of the full Brazil Comic-Con panel for Venom, in which Hardy came out and seemed pumped for show off the logo for a ton of people. He then assured us the legacy of Venom will be safe in his hands:
"I just wanted to say that I give you my word of honor that I’m going to do everything that I can to deliver the best Venom that I possibly can muster.”
There are still no in-depth story details at this point, but we do know the story will take from the Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes stories from the comics. The first of those stories finds Venom moving to San Francisco after making a pact with Spider-Man not to fight each other anymore, while Planet finds Venom teaming up with Spidey to fight some other vicious symbiote forms. These stories take Venom to places he's never gone before and solidify him as more than just some Spider-Man baddie.
Aside from a horrible little phase in 2007, Venom hasn’t been a cinematic figure in the way Spider-Man has, despite having enormous popularity. The pressure is on for Hardy and the gang to deliver something amazing, and hopefully, with an R-rating, they can feel unrestricted to make the movie they want.
VENOM arrives October 5.
