Filming is underway for HACKSAW RIDGE, Mel Gibson‘s first directorial effort since 2006’s APOCALYPTO, and the first image has been released from the upcoming movie, featuring Andrew Garfield and Vince Vaughn.
Gibson is currently shooting the film in New South Wales, Australia from a script by Robert Schenkkan and Randall Wallace, which is based on the true story about World War II US Army medic Desmond T Doss (Garfield), the first conscientious objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. Although Doss refused to kill or bear arms due to him being a Seventh-day Adventist, he was awarded with the highest military honor for saving 75 men during the Battle of Okinawa, where he was wounded by a grenade and later hit by a sniper. Vaughn plays Sgt. Howell, “a non-commissioned officer from Alabama whose job is to make sure the soldiers are ready for battle.”
In a statement, Gibson said “While production has only just begun, there is already incredible camaraderie between the cast. Not only is Andrew perfect for the role of Desmond Doss, the entire cast are an incredible mix of experience, depth and exciting up and coming talent.” Are you excited Gibson is finally back behind a camera?
HACKSAW RIDGE also stars Sam Worthington and Luke Bracey, and will likely open sometime next year.
