First images from Us tease Jordan Peele’s creepy second feature

Once Jordan Peele’s GET OUT became the talk of 2017, resulting in his first Academy Award, everyone has been waiting to see what the mastermind thinks up next. That new movie is the horror film US starring Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke, and while we know very little about the movie, we can at least suspect it’s going to be terrifying, and the first images from the movie do a chilling job proving why.

As part of EW’s current dishing out of first looks for their holiday issue, the first images from the freaky new flick have arrived. In the first image, we see Oscar-winner Nyong’o in some dire straits, looking to be in one terrifying scenario, clutching some sort of rod and ready to smack someone down. As well, she looks like she’s just dragged herself out of the dirt, so the last thing anyone should do is test her patience.

After that, we see a much more ominous image of several people cloaked in red at the end of a lane, the light causing a bit of a silhouette. We can see what looks like Duke standing there with three others, including a creepy, small child. So yeah, that’s the last thing you want to see when you’re walking home at night.

Take a look now.

EW also got a chance to talk to Peele, Nyong’o and Duke, with the director talking about where he wanted to go after the success of GET OUT. The movie centers on Adelaide and Gabe Wilson (Nyong’o and Duke) and their family as they go to the former’s old home. After spending time with the Tylers (Elizabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker, among them), Adelaide becomes increasingly paranoid that something terrible is about to happen to her and her family.  While it’s still in the same horror-thriller category as GET OUT, this time around Peele wanted to tackle a different aspect of terror that still makes for a fun experience.

“For my second feature, I wanted to create a monster mythology. I wanted to do something that was more firmly in the horror genre but still held on to my love of movies that are twisted but fun.”

Nyong’o – who was given movies to watch including THE SHINING, THE BABADOOK and IT FOLLOWS – talked about how Peele was on her “wish list” of people to work with, saying, “The very fact that I have not done anything like it was appealing, because it promised growth and excitement and new territory.”

Duke, who played the hulking M’Baku in BLACK PANTHER and AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, is playing a less masculine character this time around, comparing him more to Homer Simpson.

“It was important for me to not come off as a warrior in this film. He’s very sporadic and impulsive, he’s the husband and the alpha, and I think that leads to some of the conflict that is in the marriage when we meet the Wilsons.”

Peele has a lot to live up to after doing GET OUT, which puts even more pressure on his second movie. This new outing looks incredibly creepy in its own right, and I like not knowing a lot about the movie as it keeps the suspense nice and strong. Though we will get the first trailer soon, I like the idea of going in not knowing what to expect, and it would surely make that scene of those people on the road far more terrifying.

US hits theaters March 15, 2019.
