James Franco’s adaptation of the William Faulkner novel THE SOUND AND THE FURY will be screening out-of-competition at the Venice Film Festival in September and the first few images have arrived. It’s strange to think that with a cast of familiar funny faces that this is not a comedy. The last time we watched James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Danny McBride perform together, they were swapping their best dick jokes while tryying to survive an apocalypse. Here, Franco plays Benjy, a young man whose cognitive disabilities are a source of great shame for his family.
Here’s the official synopsis for THE SOUND AND THE FURY:
The Sound and The Fury captures the lives and passions of the Compsons, a once proud Southern family caught in a tragic spiral of loss and misfortune. Based on the novel by Noble Prize winner author William Faulkner and considered among the 20th century’s greatest works, The Sound and the Fury encapsulates the universal theme of the death of honor, social injustice and forbidden love.
Franco might be trying to prove to the world that he and his friends have range or that he really wanted to make this movie and knew his friends would say yes. Either way, the serious adaptation has my attention. The film also stars Scott Haze , Jacob Loeb, Ahna O’Reilly, Tim Blake Nelson, Joey King and Loretta Devine.
If you want to stick to their brand of comedy, Franco and Rogen are set to re-team for THE INTERVIEW this Christmas.
