First images from The Fantastic Four set as details are finally revealed

We have the first official look at a costume design for 20th Century Fox's upcoming reboot of THE FANTASTIC FOUR. As many of us were still wondering if this movie was real or not, this might serve as proof before a trailer or poster arrive (soon please). The image below shows star Michael B. Jordan in the outfit he’ll be wearing as Johnny Storm. It’s not the blue jumpsuit that fans are familiar with, so hopefully they will be able to deal with this and other changes that are inevitably coming our way. It’s a new take on an old property that’s already been done before, I think change is not only important here, but necessary.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR will offer a "contemporary re-imagining" of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team. Collider got an exclusive interview with director Josh Trank and producer/screenwriter Simon Kinberg where they opened up about the film, answered some important questions, and put a lot of rumors to rest. During the interview, Trank and Kinberg revealed few great bits of information about the project, there are no spoilers and no specific plot points – a refreshing change if you ask me.

Here are a the highlights:

  • Trank says they "consciously decided to not release anything official" until now.
  • In terms of story, Trank said, "This is a modern telling of how these four iconic characters came together and came to be."
  • The film is heavily influenced by David Cronenberg, SCANNERS, and THE FLY as they were big influences on the look of the film.
  • The film is an origin story and there are influences of what Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were doing in the 60’s all the way up into the present day.
  • Renowned composer and three-time Best Original Score Oscar nominee Philip Glass (KUNDUN, THE HOURS, and NOTES ON A SCANDAL) is scoring the movie with Marco Beltrami.
  • The film recently did a few days of additional photography and it was to film some bits and pieces. The original shoot was seventy-two days and they were on-schedule and on-budget.
  • Trank’s first cut of the film was around 2 hours and 10 minutes. He said the final film will probably be between 2 hours and 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Trank explained in detail why, as highlighed above, they "consciously decided to not release anything official" until just now:

This isn’t like The Avengers. Even when the first Avengers came out, there were four other movies that people were familiar with. The suits and the tone and the look and the feel. So they could release those things or drop them on Twitter. With Simon on the X-Men movies, there were other movies that came before the last X-Men movie so Bryan [Singer] could feel more confident in tweeting teases of what’s to come. But this movie, we really want the audience to have the proper reaction to this material seeing it for the first time. You’ve really got to put your best foot forward. You can’t just leak an image to strike up a conversation. You want people to see something that has thought behind it. And the teaser should do just that. With conversations online, you can’t really control it. In this day and age people have come to expect that artists are going to give everybody information on Twitter about what they’re doing, but not every artist is like that. I’m not really like that. If I was painting a picture I wouldn’t want to take a picture of a single paint stroke. I’d rather show people what it looks like when it’s done.

I think that's a great way to describe why they didn’t want to release anything just yet. It definitely goes hand-in-hand with the suggestion that the studio doesn’t quite know how to market this one yet; and thinking about that now, that could actually mean we are about to be given something new after all. Scary and wonderful isn’t it?

The first trailer for THE FANTASTIC FOUR is expected to debut before the studio’s Kingsman: The Secret Service on February 13, 2015. THE FANTASTIC FOUR starring Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Toby Kebbell is still scheduled to hit theaters on August 7, 2015.
