First Chilling Adventures of Sabrina images tease a dark origin story

When many people – especially ones who grew up in front of a TV in the 90’s – think of Sabrina the Teenage Witch they recall the TV show starring a plucky version of the character, played by Melissa Joan Hart. But gone are the days of pluckiness, and this new show from Netflix – CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA – looks downright haunting. Netflix has released the first images and they tease a rather grim origin story filled with plenty of dark happenings in the woods.

The series will follow the comic book run by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (who also acts as executive producer and writer on the series), which is a darker take on the "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" run as she learns to hone her witch skills as a teenager in the 1960's. The show stars Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina with Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis, Ross Lynch, Michelle Gomez, Chance Perdomo, Jaz Sinclair, Richard Coyle, Tati Gabrielle and more co-starring. With these photos dropping a teaser of some sort may not be far off, but you don’t need to see footage to get the hint they’re going for something much more – ahem – chilling here.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.
