South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are fresh off making a huge deal with MTV Entertainment Studios and ViacomCBS which will see South Park earning six more seasons on Comedy Central along with a staggering 14 films to debut on Paramount+. Now that the deal is in place, we are getting more information as to when we will see the first of those films on the streamer.
It has been announced that we will see the first two of the South Park movies before the end of the year. From there, the release pattern will see a duo of films arriving on the platform every year until 2027, which will run alongside the additional seasons of the hit animated show. With six more seasons on deck, the deal takes the show to its 30th season and beyond its 300th episode. The news was confirmed during the Paramount+ panel at the Television Critics Association panel by the Chief Programming Officer of ViacomCBS Streaming, Tanya Giles, via “ComicBook.com.”
The new South Park deal is reportedly worth around $900 million when factoring in its licensing fees and overhead costs. The deal is very much reflective of having content deals with notable producers that have thriving properties that are still relevant. South Park has essentially been the face of Comedy Central since its debut in 1997 and, back in 2019, ViacomCBS licensed older seasons of the show to HBO Max in a staggering deal that was valued at $500 million. Chris McCarthy, president-CEO of MTV Entertainment and chief content officer of adult animation for Paramount+, had this to say about the deal at the time:
“Matt and Trey are world-class creatives who brilliantly use their outrageous humor to skewer the absurdities of our culture and we are excited to expand and deepen our long relationship with them to help fuel Paramount+ and Comedy Central. Franchising marquee content like South Park and developing new IP with tremendous talents like Matt and Trey is at the heart of our strategy to continue growing Paramount Plus.”
A theatrical film based on the show, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, was released in 1999 and found great critical and financial success. The film is 80% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and, on a budget of $21 million, the movie went on to gross $83.1 million worldwide.
