THE CONJURING and INSIDIOUS director James Wan's new horror movie MALIGNANT will go head-to-severed-head with ESCAPE ROOM 2 as Warner Bros. has given the film an August 2020 release date. And today we have word from Wan on Instagram that filming has wrapped.
He writes:
So we wrapped principal photography on MALIGNANT over the weekend. Big THANK YOU to an amazing cast and crew!! You all worked hard and delivered something special! Can’t wait to get into post.
Check out his post below.
The film sports an impressive cast including Annabelle Wallis (ANNABELLE), George Young (CONTAINMENT), Jake Abel (SUPERNATURAL), Maddie Hasson (GOD BLESS AMERICA), Michole Briana White (ENCINO MAN), and Jacqueline McKenzie (Netflix's PINE GAP).
As you can imagine, plot details are currently being kept under wraps. But that said, Wan has said:
I’m super excited to go back to my indie roots with this hard-R thriller. An original horror idea (not a reboot/remake or anything based on existing IP) with old school, practical effects and no giant, blue screen sets. That’s all I’ll say for now."
The "hard-R thriller" with "old school, practical effects" is written by Wan along with THE NUN actress Ingrid Bisu who is now married to Wan.
On top of co-writing and directing this New Line horror movie, Wan will also produce the film through his Atomic Monster banner with Michael Clear. The film is being independently financed through Starlight Media and Midas Innovation, who will retain distribution rights in China. The plan is for Wan to shoot the film in Los Angeles and then move into pre-production on AQUAMAN 2 in 2020.
James Wan's MALIGNANT will open against Adam Robitel's ESCAPE ROOM 2 on August 14, 2020.
