With the upcoming Netflix mini-series Midnight Mass, writer/director Mike Flanagan is finally getting the chance to tell a story that has been on his mind for years. He first started writing Midnight Mass when his 2013 film OCULUS was in pre-production, and included Midnight Mass Easter eggs in 2016's HUSH and 2017's GERALD'S GAME. Back at the beginning of the year, he headed to Vancouver with the intention of starting work on the mini-series… then the pandemic hit and slowed things down for a while.
Production may have started later than originally planned, but it's on track now. Flanagan shared an image on his Twitter account that confirms the filming of Midnight Mass has offically begun.
Midnight Mass is expected to consist of seven episodes. It will tell the story of
an isolated island community that experiences miraculous events — and frightening omens — after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest.
Flanagan has assembled a cast for the show that includes Kate Siegel, Zach Gilford, Hamish Linklater, Henry Thomas, Annabeth Gish, Robert Longstreet, Alex Essoe, Michael Trucco, Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Abburi, Crystal Balint, Matt Biedel, Rahul Kohli, Kristin Lehman, Igby Rigney, and Annarah Shephard.
Trevor Macy is executive producing Midnight Mass with the writer/director.
I watch everything Flanagan makes, so I'm glad he's finally bringing Midnight Mass to life. I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
