Robert Rodriguez’s female-led Zorro series is on the move. It has been announced that the series is moving from NBC to The CW with Mayans M.C. executive producer, Sean Tretta, as showrunner.
Per “Deadline“, the series is likely moving because producer Sean Tretta has an overall deal with The CW parent company, CBS Studios. The series will also be produced by Robert Rodriguez and he will be co-writing the script with his sister Rebecca Rodriguez along with directing the pilot episode. The show will feature a young Latinx woman seeking vengeance for her father’s murder. While on this mission, she joins a secret society and adopts the outlaw persona of Zorro. The series was originally announced in December 2021 to be in development at NBC and this will be a new incarnation of that project.
Zorro seems to be on a big industry comeback. There are several other Zorro projects currently in development, including one with Wilmer Valderrama set to star that is in the works for Disney. There is also a reimagining of Zorro set in the future called Z, starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Kiersey Clemons, although no release date has seen set and news has been quiet on the project since 2018.
Oddly enough, Robert Rodriguez was at one point set to direct 1998’sThe Mask of Zorro and he cast Antonio Banderas as the title role before leaving the feature project. This brings him back into that world and it will be interesting to see what he does with the concept. Rodriguez has carved out a pretty solid television career as he turned his cult film From Dusk Till Dawn into a three-season run series and he’s an executive producer on The Book of Boba Fett, currently streaming on Disney+.
