We let you guys know last year that there is a direct sequel to Jim Henson's LABYRINTH in the works with director Fede Alvarez (EVIL DEAD, DON'T BREATHE) set to helm. But then Alvarez moved on to the upcoming GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO sequel/reboot THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB. So what happened to Fede Alvarez's LABYRINTH 2? Well, it seems as if it was only put on the backburner and all parties involved are still very much interested to bring the sequel to screens as soon as possible.
Fede Alvarez just told Fandango:
I was actually having lunch yesterday with Lisa Henson and we reconnected with that project. We're very excited about it. It is basically a direct continuation of the first movie many years later, and I can't tell you much more about it… but we have a script, and we're very excited about it so we'll see where that goes. Like always, it takes time and effort to put those movies together because they're larger than life. But that's one of the projects that I'm very excited about.
I'm a semi-fan of the original 1986 musical fantasy film directed by Jim Henson (and executive-produced by George Lucas). My little sister watched that shit on repeat day and night for years, so I've become more than aware of its charms and songs over those years. That said, with the passing of David Bowie, how could they make another? Let's hope they at least get Jennifer Connelly back.
Are you still excited for this sequel? Make sure to hit us up and let us know below! Until then mark your calendars as Fede Alvarez's adaption of the novel THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB is all set to hit a local multiplex near you come November 9th. Check out the latest trailer below!
