Director Fede Alvarez has a story in mind for a sequel to his film DON'T BREATHE, an idea which producer Sam Raimi has described as "the greatest idea for a sequel I've ever heard." Apparently nothing similar can be said for a sequel to Alvarez's 2013 take on EVIL DEAD, as Alvarez recently revealed to Entertainment Weekly that a story for a follow-up to that film has never been cracked – at least not to the satisfaction of everyone behind the scenes.
When asked if he would return to the world of EVIL DEAD to helm a sequel, Alvarez said:
Look, I love those movies. Making my Evil Dead was an amazing experience, it was my first film. So, going back at some point will be a possibility. I mean, I’m really good friends with all those guys, with Bruce, and Sam, and Rob (Tapert, who has produced all the Evil Dead movies). So, we always chat about it.
The good news — and I think that’s what sometimes people don’t understand — is, none of those guys will make any of these movies just because they can, just because it’s good business. They will only make it if they believe they have some good story to tell. A lot of people say that in this industry, but most of the time it’s not true. With those guys, all of us involved in those movies, we will just make them if we believe there’s a story that has to be told, and is awesome, and is great, and we believe that it will be better than anything that will be done before in that world.
[When] we find that story, when we all agree on what it is, it will probably happen."
Well, I can see what the issue is here. If the movie's not going to be made unless it's going to be better than anything EVIL DEAD that has come before, it's never going to happen, because it's just not possible to best the adventures of Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams. Now if they would just settle for making a great, entertaining movie that's creepy and gory, then maybe we will get a sequel to the reboot.
There's still no word on when or if that DON'T BREATHE sequel is actually going to get made. In the meantime, Alvarez has THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB coming out on November 9th.
