From her feature film directorial debut, Leigh Janiak has impressed with her understanding of horror and suspense. Recently the filmmaker offered her genre talents to direct the Amazon Prime series Panic. She also took on a couple of episodes of Scream: The TV Series. And now, Ms. Janiak has taken her vision to another level with the Fear Street Trilogy – the final chapter, Fear Street Part Three: 1666 is currently available on Netflix. Leigh shows a clear and refined understanding of the horror genre and a gift for creating a wildly enjoyable experience that in lesser hands might have been disastrous. As a fan of all three of the films, it was exciting to see a fresh voice bring energy to slasher style scares while never dumbing down the material. Her take on R.L. Stine's popular books is a delight, and frankly, I cannot wait to see what's next for her. Thankfully, I have three awesome flicks on Netflix now with Fear Street 1994, 1978, and 1666.
We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Leigh over Zoom on the press day for Fear Street. During our conversation, Leigh discussed her influences on this blast from the past trilogy. She opened up about the challenge of taking on this project, one near and dear to many young horror fans. It was the director's clear passion and appreciation for all things horror that impressed me the most. She is knowledgeable, incredibly kind, and what a talent for telling creepy stories she has. And best of all, she happened to be a fan of JoBlo. Well, we are fans right back. If you haven't had the chance, make sure you check out Fear Street Part Three: 1666 available today on Netflix. But if you've yet to see the first two films, I highly recommend that you do!
