Remember that (spoilers) sad part from THE FAULT IN OUR STARS? Well, that evidently cued someone from 20th Century Fox to pick up the phone and say, "You're our X-man!" Writer/director Josh Boone has been selected to co-write and direct THE NEW MUTANTS, which is being billed as a stand-alone flick that will introduce a new group of mutants to the X-Men universe. Boone will be writing the flick with Knate Gwaltney (KIDNAP), with Simon Kinberg (X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, THE FANTASTIC FOUR) producing with Lauren Shuler Donner.
Simon Kinberg on working with Josh Boone:
We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.
It actually makes perfect sense to me that Boone would be hired to helm an X-flick. He did an exceptional job of keeping FAULT IN OUR STARS from turning into some bad teen melodrama. His handle on coming-of-age characters will prove to work well within the X-universe. Plus, with all the mutants to go around, stand-alone flicks are the best way to get a glimpse at some of less popular mutants.
Lest you forget that there are actually 4 other mutant flicks in the works which include DEADPOOL coming February 12, 2016, X-MEN APOCALYPSE hitting May 27, 2016, a solo GAMBIT flick starring Channing Tatum scheduled for October 7, 2016, and the "last" Hugh Jackman WOLVERINE flick being released on March 3 of 2017. Looks like Fox is taking advantage of that license!
Which mutants would you like to see in THE NEW MUTANTS?
