Sony Pictures has picked up the global rights to Rosiland Ross’ Father Stu movie, starring Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson. Wahlberg will also produce the film that tells the true-life tale of a boxer-turned-priest, Father Stuart Long, whose journey from self-destruction to redemption inspired countless people along the way. Sony’s Father Stu movie will kneel at the alter of the cinema gods on Friday, April 15.

When Ross’ Father Stu movie opens in theaters, it will do so alongside Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Jacki Weaver and Teresa Ruiz also star alongside Wahlberg and Gibson.

“Father Stu’s journey from troublemaker to clergyman was inspiring to many, including me,” said Wahlberg. “Rosey has done an incredible job capturing the essence of who he was and how he affected the people he met. I hope that with this film, we keep his spirit alive and continue his good works.”

Up next for Wahlberg is Sony’s Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Antonio Banderas. Wahlberg plays Victor “Sully” Sullivan alongside Hollan’s Nathan Drake in the film, which serves as a prequel to the best-selling video game franchise from Naughty Dog.

As for Gibson, his Hollywood dance card is quite full with multiple roles set for 2022 and beyond. He’s recently completed work on Mark Neveldine’s Panama, which centers on an ex-marine hired by a defense contractor to travel to Panama to complete an arms deal. In the process, he becomes involved with the U.S. invasion of Panama and learns an important lesson about the true nature of political power. Gibson will also star as Olsen in Grant S. Johnson’s Agent Game. In the film, a CIA officer finds himself the target of a rendition operation after being scapegoated for the death of an interrogation subject. Gibson will also direct the long-rumored Lethal Weapon 5, which has a script drafted by Richard Wenk (The Equalizer).
