Father’s Day weekend proved to be an ideal time for HBO Max to release their reboot of the romantic comedy Father of the Bride, especially with the ratings data now in. Led by Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan, the film garnered the largest audience for a streaming-only film in its first four days for HBO Max, per Deadline.
While the streamer didn’t release solid figures, Father of the Bride was the No.1 title across HBO Max around the world after it premiered on Thursday, June 16. The movie also ranked in the top 10 most-watched title launches on HBO Max to date in Mexico, based on its performance in its first four days on the streamer.
The reason Father of the Bride is excelling in locations like Mexico is that the fresh spin with the reboot is that the film is centered around Cuban-Americans. Mexico ranks as the second-strongest country for the film’s viewing on HBO Max to date, behind only the U.S., as the film’s success shows that inclusion and representation really does matter. As HBO Max is looking to make its mark in Latin America, these results are very promising.
The Father of the Bride reboot, directed by Gaz Alazraki and written by Matt Lopez, is based on the 1949 novel of the same name by Edward Streeter. It was first turned into a film back in 1950 while the 1991 remake starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton, was successful enough to spawn a sequel. In the reboot, a father is coming to grips with his daughter’s upcoming wedding through the prism of multiple relationships in a big, sprawling Cuban-American family. Reviews for the reboot have been solid, securing an 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to Garcia and Estefan, the film also stars Adria Arjona, Isabela Merced, Diego Boneta, and Chloe Fineman.
