Adrian Lyne, famous for erotic numbers like FATAL ATTRACTION and UNFAITHFUL (as well as the disturbing cult classic JACOB’S LADDER), hasn’t helmed a film since 2002, but that looks like it will change with DEEP WATER, an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s mystery novel. Highsmith is of course the author best known for great thrillers like STRANGERS ON A TRAIN and THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, so you already know the material is ripe.
Here’s the synopsis:
In Deep Water, set in the small town of Little Wesley, Vic and Melinda Meller’s loveless marriage is held together only by a precarious arrangement whereby in order to avoid the messiness of divorce, Melinda is allowed to take any number of lovers as long as she does not desert her family. Eventually, Vic tries to win her back by asserting himself through a tall tale of murder—one that soon comes true.
Looks like this one will blend ample sex and violence, Lyne’s specialty.
Apparently talks are underway with a “big star” right now, but nothing set in stone yet. Fox 2000 is producing the film, which was penned by Zach Helm (STRANGER THAN FICTION).
Diane Lane, from Lyne’s UNFAITHFUL
