As Dante Reyes put it, “That’s the problem with having a big family. You can’t save them all.” And he is coming for all of them, with Fast X director Louis Leterrier saying that he wants Jason Momoa’s character to really show what he’s made of in upcoming entries.
Speaking with Empire in their latest issue, Fast X director Louis Leterrier said that the future of Jason Momoa’s Dante Reyes has plenty of options. “Let’s do something else…It’s never twice the same with Jason. Dante will truly evolve. Let’s explore something we haven’t seen before.” As it seems, Leterrier will be putting a lot of trust into the actor as well, who himself helped mold the character the first time around. “He was fueled by vengeance…He could have played it dark, angry. But it was interesting to play with the duality and the push-pull within the character, where within the same sentence he’s laughing and feels the pain of losing everything. Only an actor like Jason could have done that.”
The upcoming sequel and spin-off movies – which Fast X set up in a mid-credits scene involving both Jason Momoa’s Dante Reyes and Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs (the spin-off is reportedly titled Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Reyes) – can certainly offer plenty more “chaos” from the former, who proved to be quite popular with fans of the franchise. Upon Fast X’s May release, much praise was thrown on Jason Momoa’s performance as Dante, out for revenge for the death of his father, Hernán (Joaquim de Almeida), as depicted in 2011’s Fast Five.
Although Fast X didn’t perform nearly as well as most of its predecessors – it made less than half of what the top earner in the franchise, Furious 7, did – the fact that the series has become almost comically long does make it admirable in a way. When it comes down to it, they know how to build upon story and characters, whether family or diabolical.
