In the upcoming Fast X, Dominic Toretto and his family will have to face off against Dante, a new villain played by Jason Momoa.
While speaking with Total Film, Fast X director Louis Leterrier teased that Dante is “pure chaos.” The unpredictable villain also happens to be obsessed with Dom and has spent years studying his every movie. “Dante is in awe of Dom,” Letterrier said. “He’s analyzed him. There’s nowhere to hide, because he knows Dom better than he knows himself. Dom truly meets his match with Dante.” Total Film also released a new look at Jason Momoa as Dante from Fast X, which you can check out below.
The man likes his knives. The origin of the character also ties into the events of Fast Five as Dante happens to be the son of drug kingpin Hernan Reyes, who was the villain of Fast Five. The new sequel will revisit the Rio safe heist from that film, but this time, it will be from the perspective of the bad guys, as it will show that Dante was there all along, trying to stop Dom and Brian from stealing his family’s money. “Family goes both ways,” Leterrier said. “There’s family on your side. There’s also family on the other person’s side. When the family that was your super-strength becomes your Achilles’ heel, it’s where you’re going to get wounded the most.“
Louis Leterrier has previously teased the “Rashomon” twist on the Fast Five heist, which will be explored in Fast X. “So what we tried to do was to Rashomon the Fast Five safe heist, which is my favourite of all time,” Leterrier explained. “We were like, ‘What if we filmed it through the eyes of the bad guys? Where the bad guys, in that vision, are Dom and Brian, and they’re stealing this family safe?’ So we play with time. We play with perspective. That felt like a very strong thematic direction to start the movie. The movie then takes off. There’s craziness that ensues. But thematically, it’s very relatable.“
Fast X will hit theaters on May 30th.
