Fast & Furious: Vin Diesel confirms Cipher spin-off is in the works

The main Fast franchise may be coming to an end with two more movies but the universe is likely to continue to expand thanks to various spin-offs. A sequel to Hobbs & Shaw is in the works while a female-centric spin-off is also in development. There is another spinoff to add to the list and franchise head-honcho, Vin Diesel, is confirming the news.

During a piece in "Variety" regarding Charlize Theron and The Old Guard 2 going into production in early 2022, it was also revealed that Vin Diesel has assembled a writers room to develop a spin-off that is focused on Charlize Theron's Cipher. Theron's cyberterrorist made her debut in 2017's The Fate of the Furious where she blackmailed Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto to assist her in hijacking a nuclear submarine to trigger a nuclear war. The character escaped at the conclusion of the film and returned in the just-released Fast 9, albeit, with limited screentime. Diesel clearly thinks there is more to explore with her character and this could end up being yet another franchise for Theron along with The Old Guard and, if we are so lucky, another Atomic Blonde film. Theron did confirm the news that she was aware that Diesel had assembled a writers room for a Cipher spin-off but she offered no other details on the project.

The villains of the Fast franchise are a mixed bag. Most of them tend to be forgettable but Deckard Shaw and Owen Shaw, played by Jason Statham and Luke Evans, made an impression, and Theron's Cipher also proved to be a big threat, having had Dom's baby's mother Elena (Elsa Pataky), killed right in front of him. She. clearly has no limits and that makes her a villain to watch.

It'll be interesting to see what a spin-off would be. I would imagine it would be a prequel, possibly setting up how she gets where we meet her in The Fate of the Furious. I will say that it seems like she's still the main antagonist of the main franchise so it really is up in the air as to how a spin-off about her character will play it. It's the Fast and the Furious so anything is possible.
