Production on MORBIUS, Sony's next Spider-Man spinoff following VENOM, got underway last week, but there's still time for more casting announcements as Variety has reported that Tyrese Gibson (THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS) will be joining the project.
Set to be directed by Daniel Espinosa (LIFE), MORBIUS will follow Dr. Michael Morbius, "a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease and attempted to cure himself to disastrous results. Instead of being cured, he became afflicted with a condition that was a form of vampirism — the thirst for blood, along with fangs and super strength." BLADE RUNNER 2049's Jared Leto is playing the title role, and although Variety doesn't have any details on who Tyrese Gibson will be playing, THR does have a few tidbits on Gibson's character as well as several others. The role is said to be one of the last major roles in the movie, that of an FBI agent trying to hunt Morbius down. The outlet also says that Matt Smith (STAR WARS: EPISODE IX) is set to play the villain of the film, Loxias Crown, Morbius' best friend who also happens to suffer from the same blood disease, with Adria Arjona (TRIPLE FRONTIER) playing Morbius' love interest and Jared Harris (The Terror) playing Morbius' mentor. I can't say that I'm overly excited about the project at this early date, but who knows, it could wind up being a lot of fun.
Following his work on MORBIUS, which is set for a July 31, 2020 release, Tyrese Gibson will be reprising his role of Roman Pearce for the ninth installment of the FAST & FURIOUS franchise.
